Grant writers in Texas: compare the project before the postcode

By GrantWriterMatch Editorial. Provider and Texas program sources checked October 3, 2026.

Hiring a grant writer in Texas begins with separating nonprofit fundraising from public-project development. Houston foundation research, a Fort Worth organization's funding plan and administration of a rural TxCDBG award require different deliverables. Compare the documented options below, then ask each provider to confirm your service area, program experience and working arrangements.

Texas providers and the work to ask about

These unpaid editorial options are alphabetical. A Texas address does not confirm a meeting office, a local assigned writer or statewide travel. Services and prices are Published provider statements; capacity and project fit need direct confirmation. See our methodology.

Aurora: useful when Houston foundation research is part of the job

Aurora explicitly describes work for Greater Houston nonprofits. Its grant services separate funder research, writing, editing and assembly, and it offers grant calendars and fund-development planning. Research can be specific or ongoing.

Ask whether the engagement begins with a fit-screened prospect list or a funder you have already selected. Confirm whether proposal review meetings, attachments and final assembly are included, and whether staff interviews happen remotely or in person. Fees, minimum spend and service outside Greater Houston require confirmation. Source: grant services.

Connor: distinguish research, writing and municipal advice

Connor publishes a Fort Worth base and Texas/nationwide client reach. Its nonprofit and municipal consulting cover different scopes. On the nonprofit price page, research is estimated at $500–$2,500 and foundation proposal writing at $3,000–$15,000+. Those are advertised estimates, not a combined package or guaranteed quote.

Ask which budget, attachment and evaluation work is included; the site also lists add-ons. A general municipal consulting offer does not establish TxCDBG administrator certification. Confirm the exact program, assigned person, contract term and any local meetings. Sources: geographic reach and services and pricing.

Thrive: ask how writing connects to continuing fundraising

Thrive publishes a Spring, Texas contact address and describes Houston nonprofit work with nationwide service. Its grant offer includes federal, state, local and foundation writing, reporting support, and funder cultivation and stewardship.

That may suit an organization seeking a continuing process rather than a single document. Ask for separate responsibilities for prospect research, drafting, financial inputs, reporting and relationship work. Numerical fees, minimum contract commitment and on-site meeting terms are not confirmed in the checked pages. Do not treat its case-study outcomes as a forecast for your organization. Houston organizations: define the funding geography

If you are looking for grant writers in Houston, describe where the project operates, not only where your office sits. A service in Harris County, an organization covering surrounding counties and a statewide initiative do not have the same funding brief. Provide participant locations, program sites and proposed expansion areas separately.

Aurora's documented Houston focus and Thrive's Houston-area service are reasons to ask about local nonprofit fundraising experience. They are not evidence that either firm has access to every foundation or can secure an invitation. Ask a candidate to explain a funder-screening method: geographic fit, client eligibility, charitable purpose, application route and whether the organization has a realistic request.

For a prospect-research assignment, insist that the deliverable distinguishes these outcomes:

  • A funder accepts applications and your project fits the published criteria.
  • The funder appears relevant, but access, invitation or eligibility needs clarification.
  • The funder is unsuitable for a stated reason.

A list of many grant names is not enough. A useful list shows which opportunities deserve staff time, which need another step and which should be dropped. The contract should say how many prospects will be screened, how evidence will be dated and who makes the final pursuit decision.

What a sensible first purchase could look like

A hypothetical Houston nonprofit has a defined after-school program but no selected funder. It could ask for a bounded research assignment with geographic screening, a short priority list and a decision meeting. Only after that work should it request a writing quote for a named application.

If the same organization already has a foundation invitation and a complete draft, it needs review or editing, not another broad funding search. Describe what exists and the funder's requirements. Use the services comparison to keep research and application preparation distinct.

Rural public projects: TxCDBG needs another kind of check

For a project in the Texas Department of Agriculture's TxCDBG program, nonprofit writing experience is not enough to establish suitability for award administration. The TxCDBG certification page states that people responsible for administration of a TxCDBG grant contract or agreement must be certified. The requirement attaches to the responsible administrator, including specified staff and third-party arrangements.

TDA maintains a certified-administrator list. Its page says previous certifications expired January 1, 2026, so an old certificate or past project is insufficient. Ask for the responsible person's name and check the current list. None of the three options above is represented here as a confirmed certified TxCDBG administrator. Being a Texas consultant or offering “government grants” does not establish that status.

The TxCDBG Implementation Manual includes procurement guidance and administration forms. Have your procurement lead identify the process applicable to your funding cycle and services before awarding a contract.

Ask a public-project candidate to separate application development, award administration, environmental work, engineering coordination, financial documentation and closeout. A writing fee should not silently imply that every downstream responsibility is covered.

Compare the total fee without inventing a Texas average

This limited comparison does not establish an average Texas grant-writer price. One provider's estimated research fee cannot be compared with another's full-year fundraising commitment as if they buy the same work.

Request a total price for a defined period, including required meetings, revisions, application budgets, attachment coordination and submission support. State what happens if the funder changes the deadline or you decide not to pursue the application after screening. Ask about a deposit, cancellation terms and whether unused monthly hours carry forward.

For illustration, a hypothetical quote of $2,000 per month for a required six-month term is a $12,000 commitment before separately priced extras. It is not a $2,000 project. This is fee math, not a Texas benchmark. The cost guide explains more ways quotes differ.

Local or remote: name the meeting you need

Texas-based does not mean nearby to every Texas buyer. If you need an in-person site review or interviews, state the project address, purpose, number of visits and dates, then obtain written travel terms. If your only requirement is experience with a state program, a remote specialist may be suitable.

For a remote engagement, settle who collects local data, who talks with partners and how leadership approves factual claims. Your team must still own the project design and financial information. For scientific business funding, compare SBIR/STTR specialists before applying a local-distance filter.

Questions before contacting a Texas writer

Can a Houston firm support a project elsewhere in Texas?

Ask directly. Houston-focused service does not establish statewide availability. Connor and Thrive publish broader reach; that still requires agreement on your particular engagement and any travel.

Is TxCDBG certification needed for every Texas grant writer?

The cited requirement concerns the person responsible for TxCDBG administration. It should not be generalized to all foundation writing, all grant programs or every consultant. Use the funding program's own current requirements.

Can GrantWriterMatch arrange the consultation?

Contact links take you to the provider's site. The provider manages its own inquiry and booking process. GrantWriterMatch does not send your information or reserve a slot.
